The print design is handmade and illustrates a growing and living nature, just like the algae, where the colour comes from. The colour of the print will change over time, and thus the print will continually grow and live.
To me sustainability is an important ingredient in all of my project, however I do not find it easy to work with, because there are so many aspects to this particular topic. In this project my focus has been to create a print without any use of chemicals.
Therefore,I wanted to use an alternative analogue printing technique to screen printing.The choice fell on a very simple technique that uses a string to create a print.The technique is flexible and allows many different unique prints.
The algae Spirulina comes in powder form and has a beautiful and very intense green colour. During my work with this new type of dye, I discovered how the green colour changed during heat, washing and later sunlight. This gives an interesting perspective to my design where the algae live on and changes over time.
